Neil Robertson, The Thunder from Down Under

Have you heard of the Thunder from Down Under or his other nicknames the Melbourne Machine or Robocop?

Well if you haven’t, read on to find out why this very fine and striking Australian Sportsperson is without any shadow of a doubt already one of our greatest ever and he’s only 34 years old.

Neil Robertson is a Professional Snooker player phenomenon who in 2010 won the World Snooker Championship and later that year became the World’s Number One ranked player.

Testament to his incredible talent he also attained the Top World ranking in 2013 and 2014.

Born 11 February 1982, Robertson entered the World Professional ranks with his shock of blonde hair back in 2006/07 season

His immense talent became undeniably evident when as a 14-year-old, became the youngest player to make a century break in an Australian ranking event.

Two years later he turned pro and in 2003 began to make ripples on the International stage by winning the World Under Under-21 Snooker Championship in New Zealand

The following season he moved into the top 32 of world rankings and then 12 months later was in the top 16 before a historic breakthrough win in the 2006/07 season.

He became the first ever Australian to win a professional ranking tournament, the 2006 Royal London Watches Grand Prix on 29 October in Aberdeen, Scotland.

In taking out the tournament he disposed of Ronnie O’Sullivan 5–1 in the quarter-finals, Alan McManus 6–2 in the semis then Jamie Cope 9–5 in the final.

Robertson has now won 11 Rankings Tournaments and has been runner-up seven times.

As of May 2^nd, Robertson is currently ranked fifth in the world with career winning of just over $6.1 million and climbing!

Married to Norwegian girl Mille, they’ll celebrate their son Alexander’s sixth birthday on May 12, 2016.

Neil Robertson is a remarkable story and is rightfully regarded as Australia’s best ever Snooker players which is by no means any lack of respect to the great Walter Lindrum.

During the 2013/2014 season, he became the first player to make 100 centuries in a single season and in winning the 2015 UK Snooker Championship, also became the first player to make a maximum 147 break in the final of the tournament.

John Thurston the Pool Player

John Thurston the Pool Player carves up Pool Tables in the 1800’s

Mention the name Thurston today and it’s all about that North Queensland Cowboys Rugby League star Johnathan and his immortal skills when carving up a football field.

But in the early 1800s, it was a different story, John Thurston the pool player was associated with carving up a Pool Table.

John Thurston (1777-1850) is recognised as the grandfather of Pool Table.

In 1826 he built the first pool table using slate as the bed which is still used today.

Up until that time, pool table beds were made of wood. Thurston’s dislike of the warping tendency of wood and general playability prompted him to look for another material.

Slate was cheap, in abundance and offered a much smoother surface while its weight made for a far sturdier table. The rest is history.

Billiard Shop Pool Tables are all slate beds that come with a lifetime guarantee.

John Thurston the pool player slate beds were manufactured in four or five parts and held together by a tongue and groove. The final process was sanding a precise flat finish.

But his innovation didn’t stop there. He was also the first to build rubber cushions.

The rubber came in strips and were glued together to make the cushions which previously were filled with either horsehair or stuffed with felt.

The discovery of ‘vulcanisation’ by Charles Goodyear in 1839 made for further advancement in this production process.

These initial rubber cushions were raw by today’s standards but further research by John Thurston the pool player’s company resulted in a more accurate deflection angle and less prone to temperature changes.

During this time, John Thurston the pool player became the first person to mass produce and distribute Pool Tables and was accordingly announced as the exclusive Royal Purveyor of King George IV (died 1830 – heart attack), his successor and the last King of England, William IV (died 1837 – heart attack) and then with Queen Victoria.

Of interest, Queen Victoria was William IV’s niece who had no surviving legitimate children. He did have 10 illegitimate children – eight of those with actress Dorothea Jordan. Hmmm!

When John Thurston died in 1850, his legacy had well and truly been established.

The business which started out in the Furniture manufacturing trade in 1799 continues today.

Before the factory was destroyed during the London bombing raids during WWII, there was a Championship room that hosted regular leading tournaments.

Australian great Walter Lindrum was just one of the many high-profile players that visited.

It’s interesting to note that it wasn’t long after Thurston began producing slate beds that it was also being done in Australia. The new innovation spread worldwide very quickly.

In the 1850s, Dublin-born Australian immigrant Henry Alcock began producing slate tables in Melbourne.

Alcock overcame initial supply problems by purchasing the homes of early settlers in

Collingwood whose homes were built entirely of slate.

It goes to show just how much history there is in the game of Pool or Snooker for that matter.

To say there is history in tables is an understatement.

But one key asset of the slate Pool Table will always remain. It brings family and friends together.

So next time you see today’s Johnathan Thurston run around a paddock for the Cowboys, Maroons or Kangaroo cast your mind back to when another John Thurston held court.

Billiard Table Feet

Quality Billiard Table feet are a great feat for any Pool Table

You can tell a lot about a person from their shoes and you can also tell a lot about a Pool Table by its feet.

A broken heel on a woman’s shoe, and there will be a few during the Spring Racing Carnival, doesn’t make for a pleasurable walk.

Likewise, broken feet, resulting in a lopsided Pool Table, don’t make at all for an enjoyable game of Pool or Snooker.

So how does one actually break billiard table feet?

The most common fault is damage caused when you move the table yourself but more often than not it’s through general wear and tear or through an inferior product.

An old table that has stood the test of time in an exposed environment, such as a deck or shed, will more than likely have resulted in the billiard table feet becoming rusted.

This will particularly be the case if the foot is made from a cheaper metal. Then of course there are the plastic foot components which can break in a number of ways.

Billiard Shop has three types of feet that can resuscitate the life and look of your table and are relatively easy to install.

Billiard Shop does urge caution as the last thing you want to do is break your own foot while replacing one. We’ll do it for you.

The plain Brass small foot that includes the flange, bolt and nut will last a lifetime.

Like any brass product, you can bring it to a wonderful shine but left by itself it still does hold its place in any Pool Room.

The Chrome plain small foot also includes the flange, bolt and nut.

From a practical point of view, the Chrome feet are great but there’s no doubting the Brass is the more traditional look.

The third option is the simple adjustable glide foot which comes with the T nut. This option well and truly does the job but naturally doesn’t look as flashy as the Brass and Chrome options.

The Billiard Shop feet can all be placed on any range of pool table so it does come down to personal choice.

If your pool table doesn’t have billiard table feet, in other words is just all legs, Billiard Shop can add them. This is done by cutting off around three inches from each leg and then placing it on the legs.

This process won’t affect the universal playing height of the table and does give it an upgraded look.

Shoes don’t make the man, but they certainly make women feel better new feet won’t make you play Pool better but they will give you a nice feeling that your table looks and plays great. And that’s a sure bet!

Having a pool table ping pong cover will do wonders for the development of your children’s hand-eye coordination.

Table Tennis tops are professionally cut to size to be placed over the top of the seven and eight-foot pool tables without causing any damage.

The nine-foot-long (274cm) and 5 foot wide (152.5 cm) are the proper dimensions of a table tennis table.

For many parents, the table tennis tops have been a godsend for when their children are looking to do something different.

Billiard Shop stock them in a stunning electric blue which tends to add to the playing experience.

The nets are easily attached through a clip-on mechanism that ensures a great firm, straight and tight net.

The tennis table top comes in two pieces. Lifting and lowering them gently on top of the pool table is easily done by two people.

The weight and the quality material used in the table allow them to be easily stored by being leaned against a wall.

Storage is easy and the garage is the usual place. To ensure the table’s longevity it is recommended to have them propped up off the ground and also to throw a blanket over the top.

The tables come with the net along with two bats and two balls though to stop any potential mayhem we do recommend picking up more balls which do come off second best when stood on.

Pool Table Lights to Shine Light on Your Game

Billiard Table lights most certainly inject an exciting visual and practical dynamic in the pool room.

There truly is something mystical about traditional lights hanging above your pride and joy.

Purely and simply the lights are designed to eliminate any shadow so that you can see every angle and opportunity to pocket those little round beauties.

But just as it is annoying driving at night with the oncoming driver having his vehicle lights on full beam burning the back of your eyelids, so too are bright lights shining into your eyes when playing pool.

So naturally your Pool Table lights need to be positioned at such a height and with specific covers so as to eliminate any glare when playing your stroke.

The recommended height for hanging lights is 32 inches (81.28 cm) above the table but that’s on the undertaking that you are hanging proper shaded pool table lights that direct the light directly down towards the table.
