You’d think my teenage boys Zac and Cooper and the baby of the family Eloise would have spent every last minute on the beach during our Christmas holiday at a Gold Coast Resort.

But then again it was hot, bloody hot! So our time getting wet was in between the Surf and the Resorts Outdoor Pool Tables.

The Pool became more favourable as those pesky blue bottles drifted in. I stepped on one in the shallows and through my man tears and wife giggling at my reaction I was still glad it was me rather than the kids. Nothing like setting an example!

But anyway here’s the thing. Guess where my thirteen, eleven and nine-year-olds spent the majority of their time? Around the Pool Tables.

Me, Brendan. A 43-year-old RAAF NCO based out of Oakey on the western outskirts of Toowoomba didn’t grow up with a Pool Table and I’d never even thought of getting one.

So it was intriguing but at the same time not surprising that my active kids hogged the Pool Table for extended periods during the Resort stay.

I discovered that you can learn a lot about watching your children play on a Pool Table and I was heartened that the boys showed some real patience in letting Eloise have a go.

She was actually pretty good and not that I know a lot about the game but she kept the cue very straight when playing a shot. Apparently, that helps!

As expected the competitive streaks of Zac and Cooper came out. Seeing them using their brains to strategize shots was a real eye-opener. I believe seeing your kids think on the spot is one of the great pleasures of being a parent.

It took a couple of days before I was summoned by the boys to play. With Eloise and mum Dorothy joining in we had a wow of a time. Though I think Dorothy was just glad that the game didn’t get in the way of her intermittent Cocktails. I’ll give her Hanky Panky! Yes, it’s a drink – look it up.

By day four of our five-day getaway the “please can we get one” started. It didn’t stop during the drive back up the range to Toowoomba.

My response was where on earth are we going to find room in the house for a Pool Table.

Now my kids are pretty resourceful and when Zac googled Pool Tables Toowoomba on the iPad he discovered there is such a thing as an Outdoor Pool Tables.

“We’ll put it on the deck Dad”, Zac and Cooper said almost simultaneously.

Well, that was the clincher. Best decision I or rather we as a family have made. An Outdoor Pool Table called an X Men and didn’t the boys and Eloise love that?

A FUN Weekend Surprise Around the Pool Table

It’s the regular Monday morning question at work. “How was your weekend?”.

For High School teacher Alex from Brisbane, his response this Monday morning was a bit more animated than usual.

In between taking sips of his morning cup of steaming coffee in the staff room, he replied “Absolutely fantastic!”.

Alex paused in reflection before adding to his statement as the gathered staff member’s eyes widened in impatient anticipation of his justification for using the word ‘fantastic’.

“I went around to a mate’s place, Anthony, the Sparky you know from touch-footy, for a couple of quiet ones”.

“A couple of our mates and their partners and wives were also there and we just kicked back for what at first was meant to be an early night”.

“Anthony hadn’t told us beforehand but he had a brand spanking new Pool Table and along with the new cues, it was amazing to play on. There was plenty of banter throughout the evening – it was such a cool way to chill out with good people, some of whom I hadn’t seen for a while, so we spent the weekend around the pool table”.

What Alex didn’t tell his colleagues is his game was pretty ordinary but it didn’t concern him one little bit due to the craic of the evening.

That’s not to say he didn’t have a win. He got on like a house on fire with Anthony’s wife’s (Bernadette) friend Angela. For the record, no numbers were exchanged but they’re all catching up for another night of Pool and banter in three weeks. Let the good times roll!

Alex finished his ‘How was your weekend’ explanation with, “I’m now seriously thinking about getting a Pool Table myself”.

“Do you even have room at your place to fit a Pool Table”, Trudi the Science teacher quips.

“Absolutely”, Alex replied. “Anthony’s table is a seven-footer, just over two metres, and that would fit nicely in my dining room which I never use as I eat in the kitchen”.

The morning school bell rings. Mary’s mind is now in overdrive thinking she wants a Pool Table for her teenage children.

We generally advise the player to start off slowly with the 360 PureCue. For example, begin to become more familiar with the device by using the cue ball only, training yourself to gradually increase the distance and the amount of power you can use without the cue flexing. This can be done by potting the white only with top, screw, side or a combination of some of these but it is recommended you master the centre ball area first as the cue is more likely to be on a plain that is easier to keep the energy running through the strike.
Add the object ball along the way when you feel you can. You don’t necessarily have to master these things before you attempt other shots but it is recommended that you use this routine to some degree regardless of how proficient you become with it.
We suggest you simply try some set play exercises like lineups. Using the 360 PureCue this way will help you to develop your technique and tempo when in and amongst the balls.
When confident enough, you can begin to introduce some long pots. Long pots with side, stun or screw are particularly challenging, as are safety shots from a distance with a side.
Rest play with the 360 PureCue can also prove very challenging and as with normal rest play with a standard cue the boundaries are narrower. It is recommended that you take it very easy at first when using the rest with the 360, maybe even beginning without any balls at all just to get a feel for it.
Continue to fill in the gaps in your own individual way. When you feel ready, you can even try using the 360 PureCue Stroke Trainer in an actual game. The fact that you would then be using the device in such a life-like situation will help you to confirm the overall progress you have made.

Caring for Your 360 PureCue

Do not overly bend the spring mechanism in a fashion that is outside what the 360 PureCue has been designed for.
Avoid using the cue to lean on when standing around the table.
Avoid leaning the cue against the wall.
When screwing and unscrewing the cue, never hold the butt side of the cue with one of your hands, instead, keep both hands close at either side of the screw joint to avoid twisting the spring mechanism.

Different Size Pool Cues Make a Difference

Are you aware that there are different size pool cues for different size Billiard Table games?

If you weren’t aware you are definitely not alone as it’s a common unknown fact that there are different size pool cues.

The different size pool cues and particularly cue tips relate to the size of the cue balls used for the particular games and tables.

The Billiard Shop manufactures appropriate cues for Snooker, standard English Pool and American Pool.

English Pool Cues

The English Pool cues are the most common cues as they are designed for the games we play on the 6ft or 7ft pool tables.

The size of the cue ball on these tables is also slightly smaller than the object balls which tend to be around 1 7/8 inches.

Because the cue-ball is lighter and only needs to travel around a 6ft or 7ft table you don’t need to strike it with extreme force.

As a result, the standard length of the English Pool Cue is around 56 to 57 inches long and most importantly the cue-tip is 8.5mm.

Snooker Cues

The cue-tip of Snooker cues is generally around 9.5mm in diameter. The length of the cue, whether one or two pieces tends to be around 57 or 58 inches.

The reason for this is quite simple. The full-size Snooker Table such as Billiard Shop’s Supreme or Grand Duke is 10′ x 5′ and 12′ x 6′.

The balls have to travel further and are therefore larger in size. The Billiard Shop stocked Aramith Tournament Champion Snooker Balls are 2 1/16” (52.4mm).

So naturally you need more power to hit the ball particularly straight.

American Pool Cues

The best way to sum up American Pool Cues is a ‘fast game is a good game’. The game is designed around speed and entertainment and the cues are made to promote this.

The cues look exciting and more technological advancements have gone into them than any other cue on the market.

The USA pool tables have 2 ¼ inch drop pockets along with worsted cloth commonly referred to as American 9 Ball worsted cloth.

The bigger pockets compensate for the bigger object balls which are both 2 ¼ inch (57mm).

So to best direct the balls around the table, the best American Pool Cues are big and strong at around 58 inches long and are a two-piece funnel robust construction.

To promote optimum control the cue tips are 12-13mm in diameter. A great example of the American Pool cues is the Billiard Shop.

Summer during the early weeks of 2017 has been stinking hot right across Queensland with temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).

So it’s timely to delve into how pool table temperature affects the playability of pool tables.

The factors that affect the playability of a game of Pool are naturally the balls, the cloth, the rubbers and the slate itself, so the weather and associated pool table temperature do affect playability.

During this current heat wave, you may have noticed your pool balls being considerably more lively. It is true. Warmer temperatures do make pool balls more lively.

To explain why this occurs we have to get a little bit scientific. When the cue ball is directed to collide with an object ball there is a transference of kinetic energy which is the passing of energy from one object to another to make it move.

As warmer objects have a higher average of kinetic energy than those in cooler ones, warmer balls will react in a much more excitable fashion than cooler balls.

To test this for yourself place some balls in a fridge to cool them down and at the same time place some other balls in a tub of hot water to heat them. After about 10 minutes pull them out, dry them off and see the difference when hitting them.

A pool table temperature that is warmer will also make balls travel quicker with less effort. This has been known for centuries! Queen Victoria had a pool table that was heated using zinc tubes which also kept the ivory balls from going out of shape.

The warmer the slate and the warmer the cloth equates to less resistance and the same principles apply to the rails. When rubber is cold, its elasticity is reduced and will age faster.

Of interest, changing the pool table temperature by heating tables in the World Professional Snooker tournaments is standard. The under-table heaters are set at 50 Celsius to achieve a playing surface of around 21 Celsius. So naturally a warm table makes for warm balls.

But as we’ve all experienced there are two types of heat dry and humid. Humidity can play havoc with the rails with the moisture content resulting in extra springy rubbers that cause balls to jump the table. This is more likely in Snooker with the smaller balls being lighter.

The way to get around this is to place a dehumidifier in the room.
But let’s face it, we all don’t play pool for sheep stations so what we are really after is player comfort and good times.

So whack on the air conditioner or the fan.

If you’ve got an outdoor pool table, the fabric and materials are made to withstand all types of weather so the biggest priority is to make sure you preserve its life with a pool table cover and brush it regularly.

As for player comfort when playing on an outdoor pool table during a hot and humid summer day or barmy night, a nice cold drink and a smile!
